A steamfitter does the following:

  • Plans, designs, installs and services many different types of commercial and industrial piping systems.
  • Installs, alters or repairs steam and hot water boiler systems.
  • Blueprint reading, drafting and sketching.
  • Works with pipe – steel, stainless steel, titanium, copper, fiberglass and many different types of plastic.
  • Works with valves, controls and fittings.
  • Measures, cuts, threads, grooves, welds, solders, bends and generally fastens, assembles and installs pipe.
  • Installs and repairs piping in mines, dams, power plants, oil refineries, pulp and paper mills, chemical plants and on ships.
  • A steamfitter must be intelligent, able to make decisions and be productive.
  • Must be physically fit and agile.
  • Must be willing to travel and often work in remote areas of the province.
